Bird is a shared electric vehicle company offering dockless e-scooters and e-bikes for short urban trips through a mobile app. Founded in 2017 by former Uber and Lyft executive Travis VanderZanden, Bird became the fastest U.S. startup to reach a $1 billion unicorn valuation. After rapid global expansion and a 2021 SPAC merger with Switchback II Corporation that took it public on the NYSE under ticker BRDS, Bird struggled with unit economics, regulatory pushback, and falling ride volumes. The company was delisted from NYSE to OTC in September 2023, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2023, and emerged in 2024 under a new private parent company, Third Lane Mobility Inc., operating Bird alongside the Spin brand.
