Britishvolt was a UK-based electric vehicle battery manufacturer that planned to develop and produce advanced lithium-ion battery cells for electric vehicles through a £3.8 billion gigafactory in Northumberland. The company was founded in 2019 by Swedish entrepreneurs Orral Nadjari and Lars Carlstrom with the aim of establishing the UK's first battery gigaplant. The facility was designed to produce up to 50 gigawatt-hours of lithium-ion batteries annually by 2028. Construction began in 2021 but was halted in August 2022 due to funding difficulties. The company entered administration on 17 January 2023 after failing to secure sufficient financing, and was subsequently acquired by Recharge Industries in February 2023.
