Originally founded as an independent startup, Cruise was acquired by General Motors in 2016 and became a wholly-owned subsidiary. The company was focused on developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for robotaxi operations. In December 2024, General Motors announced it would cease funding Cruise's robotaxi business and realign operations toward advanced driver assistance systems for personal vehicles.
