Evolutionary Scale (stylized EvolutionaryScale) is a frontier AI research lab and Public Benefit Corporation building large-scale generative models for biology. Founded in 2023 by former members of Meta FAIR's protein team that developed ESM1, the company launched publicly in June 2024 with ESM3, a 98-billion-parameter multimodal generative model trained on 2.78 billion protein sequences that jointly reasons over protein sequence, structure, and function. The technology is used by researchers and pharma partners for protein engineering, drug discovery, and synthetic biology, distributed via AWS and NVIDIA BioNeMo. In November 2025, the EvolutionaryScale team and technology joined Chan Zuckerberg Biohub in a strategic transaction with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; co-founder Alex Rives was named Head of Science for CZI.
