EvolutionaryScale is a frontier AI research lab building large generative language models for biology. Spun out of Meta's FAIR protein team in 2023, the company developed the ESM (Evolutionary Scale Modeling) family of protein language models, culminating in ESM3, a multimodal generative model trained on 2.78 billion protein sequences that jointly reasons over protein sequence, structure, and function. ESM3 was used to generate a novel green fluorescent protein representing the equivalent of roughly 500 million years of natural evolution. The company emerged from stealth in June 2024 with a $142M seed round led by Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Lux Capital with participation from Amazon and NVIDIA's NVentures. In November 2025, EvolutionaryScale was acquired by Chan Zuckerberg Biohub as part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's restructuring around an AI-x-biology mission, with co-founder Alex Rives becoming Head of Science at CZI.
