San Francisco, CA, USA Gaming & Virtual Worlds Acquired

Linden Lab (officially Linden Research, Inc.) is the San Francisco-based developer of Second Life, the pioneering 3D virtual world launched in 2003 where users create avatars, build environments, socialize, and transact via the in-world Linden Dollar economy. Founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale, the company is widely regarded as a forerunner of today's metaverse platforms, with billions of dollars in user-to-user transactions over Second Life's lifetime. Linden Lab also operates Tilia Inc., a licensed money transmitter providing payments infrastructure for virtual economies. In July 2020, Linden Research, Inc. announced its acquisition by an investment group led by Randy Waterfield and Brad Oberwager; Oberwager subsequently took on the Executive Chairman/CEO role at the company.
