Northvolt

Stockholm, Sweden Clean Technology Acquired

Northvolt was a Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer founded in 2015 by former Tesla executives, building gigafactories at Skelleftea and Vasteras for electric-vehicle, industrial and energy-storage cells. It raised roughly $15 billion in equity, convertible notes and debt from Volkswagen, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Canadian pension funds and the European Investment Bank before filing for Chapter 11 in November 2024 and for bankruptcy in Sweden in March 2025, the largest in modern Swedish industrial history. US battery maker Lyten agreed in August 2025 to buy the remaining Swedish and German assets and completed the Swedish acquisition in February 2026.
