Proterra was an American electric bus and battery systems manufacturer founded in 2004. The company designed and manufactured battery-electric transit buses, powertrain systems for commercial vehicle manufacturers (Proterra Powered), and charging infrastructure solutions (Proterra Energy). Operating as a three-segment business, Proterra served as the North American leader in zero-emission transit bus manufacturing before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2023. The company's assets were subsequently sold to Volvo Battery Solutions (Powered division for $210M), Phoenix Motor (Transit division), and Cowen Equity/CSI (Energy division).
