Shazam is a music recognition application that uses audio fingerprinting technology to identify songs. Users capture a brief audio sample from their device's microphone, and Shazam matches it against its database to return song title, artist, and metadata. Launched commercially in 2002 in the UK via short code (2580), the app later became available on the iPhone in 2008 and has been downloaded over 2 billion times. The service enables music discovery and links to streaming platforms. Acquired by Apple in September 2018.
