Sigfox 0G technology

Labege (Toulouse), France IoT Connectivity Acquired

Sigfox 0G technology is a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) communication service provider for the Internet of Things, pioneering the proprietary '0G' network designed for ultra-low-cost, ultra-low-power, long-range connectivity of small, battery-powered devices. Founded in 2010 by Ludovic Le Moan and Christophe Fourtet in Labege near Toulouse, France's 'IoT Valley', Sigfox built a global cellular-style network operated through 75 Sigfox Operators across more than 70 countries. The technology transmits small messages (12-byte payloads) over sub-GHz unlicensed ISM bands, enabling use cases such as asset tracking, smart meters, supply-chain monitoring, and industrial telemetry. After raising more than EUR 300M in venture funding by 2016 at a roughly EUR 600M valuation and becoming an early French tech unicorn, Sigfox struggled commercially against competing LPWAN standards LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, ultimately filing for insolvency protection in January 2022 and entering receivership at the Commercial Court of Toulouse. In April 2022, Singapore-based massive-IoT service provider UnaBiz was selected from nine bidders as the new owner of Sigfox SA and Sigfox France SAS, reportedly for around EUR 25M. Under UnaBiz, the Sigfox 0G network continues to operate globally and is being converged with LoRaWAN through a partnership with Semtech.

Competitors

Competitor list is illustrative and may be incomplete, stale, or erroneous.

  • Semtech (LoRa / LoRaWAN)

Public semiconductor company that designs and exclusively manufactures LoRa chips, the underlying technology powering LoRaWAN; LoRaWAN is the dominant LPWAN standard with ~41% market share and the leading alternative to Sigfox's 0G network.

  • NB-IoT (3GPP standard, operated by cellular carriers)

Narrowband-IoT, a 3GPP-standardized cellular LPWAN technology operated globally by mobile network operators (Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile, etc.) that competes directly with Sigfox for low-power, low-bandwidth IoT connectivity.

  • Helium

Decentralized LoRaWAN-based wireless network using a token-incentivized model where individuals deploy hotspots to provide IoT coverage; an emerging alternative to centralized LPWAN networks like Sigfox.

  • Ingenu (RPMA)

Provider of the Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA) LPWAN technology operating in the 2.4 GHz band; positioned as an alternative to Sigfox for machine-to-machine and IoT networks.

  • LTE-M

3GPP cellular IoT standard (LTE Cat-M1) offering higher bandwidth and mobility than Sigfox/NB-IoT, deployed by major mobile carriers for IoT applications requiring more capacity.

  • Senet

US-based public LoRaWAN network operator providing nationwide LPWAN coverage and IoT connectivity services; a regional alternative to Sigfox in North America.
