Trion Worlds was a Redwood City-based MMO game developer and publisher founded in 2006 by Lars Buttler and Jon Van Caneghem. The studio created and operated free-to-play and subscription MMO titles including Rift, Defiance, Trove, ArcheAge (publishing in the West), Atlas Reactor, and Defiance 2050. After multiple rounds of layoffs and restructurings, Trion Worlds was acquired by German free-to-play publisher Gamigo in October 2018, with the majority of staff laid off and live game operations continuing under Gamigo.
