Windsurf

Mountain View, CA Artificial Intelligence Acquired

Windsurf is an AI-native, agentic integrated development environment (IDE) originally founded in 2021 as Exafunction by MIT classmates Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen. The company pivoted from GPU virtualization to AI developer tools in 2022, launching as Codeium with an AI code-completion plugin for VS Code, JetBrains, and other editors. In November 2024 it released the Windsurf Editor, a standalone VS Code fork built around an agentic system called Cascade that can reason across an entire codebase, run terminal commands, and orchestrate multi-file changes autonomously. The company rebranded fully from Codeium to Windsurf in April 2025. After a proposed $3B OpenAI acquisition collapsed in early July 2025 over Microsoft IP licensing complications, Google paid approximately $2.4B in a reverse acqui-hire on July 11, 2025 to license Windsurf's technology and hire co-founders Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen plus roughly 40 senior researchers into Google DeepMind. Three days later, on July 14, 2025, Cognition Labs (the maker of AI software engineer Devin) acquired the remaining Windsurf entity, including its IP, trademark, product, and roughly 250 remaining employees, at a price widely estimated around $250M. At acquisition Windsurf had reached approximately $82M in ARR with 350+ enterprise customers and hundreds of thousands of daily active users. Jeff Wang (formerly head of business) serves as interim CEO under Cognition.

Competitors

Competitor list is illustrative and may be incomplete, stale, or erroneous.

  • Cursor (Anysphere)

Cursor, made by Anysphere, is the leading AI-native code editor and Windsurf's closest direct competitor. Also a VS Code fork, Cursor crossed $1B in ARR within roughly two years and emphasizes precise context control via @-mentions and indexing.

  • GitHub Copilot

Microsoft/GitHub's AI pair programmer, available as an extension across VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Xcode, Neovim, and Eclipse. Reports approximately 4.7M paid subscribers, 20M total users, and roughly 90% Fortune 100 adoption.

  • Replit

Browser-based development environment whose Replit Agent competes with Windsurf for full-app generation, particularly among prosumer and education users who want zero local setup.

  • Anthropic Claude Code

Anthropic's terminal-based agentic coding tool that competes with Windsurf's Cascade for autonomous multi-step coding workflows, particularly among power users who prefer CLI-first interfaces.

  • Devin (Cognition Labs)

Devin, Cognition Labs' autonomous AI software engineer, was previously a competitor in the agentic coding space but became Windsurf's sibling product following Cognition's July 2025 acquisition. Cognition is positioning Devin (autonomous agent) and Windsurf (interactive IDE) as complementary surfaces of the same agentic-coding platform.

  • Google Gemini Code Assist / Antigravity

Google's AI coding suite, now significantly strengthened by the July 2025 acqui-hire of Windsurf's founders into DeepMind plus the non-exclusive license of Windsurf technology.
